British Airways Flights to Gibraltar

Juan Carlos Juárez, the Mayor of La Línea de la Concepción, expressed his disappointment last week at the decision announced by British Airways to suspend all flights between Gibraltar and Madrid after the end of September.
In a statement offered two weeks ago the chairman of GB Airways, James Gaggero, had said that when they launched the services “we were keen to do all we could to support the efforts of our politicians and the ‘Cordoba process’.” “We have not been able to overcome a number of obstacles”, he added.

Juárez recalls how the airline launched the route in May with great pomp and circumstance and “as it is a solid company, it is hard to understand the reasons for the suspension, despite the explanations offered by British Airways”. Juárez called for the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, to “explain what the Anglo-Gibraltarian airline business really has in mind for the new airport”.

The Mayor went on to say that if the reasons are political “they ought to explain themselves without sparing us the details; if their reasons are financial, it is regrettable that such a solid firm with such knowledge and experience in air transport didn’t do any market research, or at least wait for a sensible amount of time to see how the route went, or even for the new terminal. They haven’t taken any of this into account and after September it looks like Iberia will have the job of keeping the joint use of the Rock’s airport alive”.

“The main airport for the Campo de Gibraltar has always been Malaga, with Gibraltar emerging as a breath of fresh air given the overcrowding suffered by the Costa del Sol airport in the summer”, concluded Juárez.
